Question
I heard about different types of resets on the BrailleNote. Can you explain what they are and how to perform them?
Answer
Yes, there are different resets for different purposes. Depending on the unit, there may be three or four resets. They are:
- Classic: Warm Reset, ROM Reset, Hard Reset.
- PK: Warm Reset, ROM Reset, Hard Reset, Restart Pk Hardware with C1 and C4 keys.
- mPower: Warm Reset, ROM Reset, Hard Reset, Service Reset with Reset and Record buttons.
- Apex: Warm Reset, Hard Reset, Clean Reset.
The descriptions of each of the resets are provided below.
Warm Reset
This reset just restarts Keysoft. Press the Reset button (located just behind the power switch; on the PK, press the front recessed buttons called C3 and C4, located to the right of the space bars). BrailleNote "beeps" to confirm the press of the button. After few moments, a chime or music will be heard, followed by a startup message, which informs you of version of Keysoft you are using.
This Reset is useful if your brailleNote does not respond to key presses, or a software installer asks you to perform a reset.
ROM/Safe Mode/Installation Reset
This reset restarts Keysoft from Keysoft System Disk. Hold down dots 1-2-3 (FDS) then press Reset (C3+C4 on PK) button. Do not release the keys until you hear a chime or a music.
This reset does not load add-ons such as GPS and Concise Dictionary. This is equivalent to running Keysoft without any add-ons. In this mode, you can perform software installation/uninstall, troubleshoot Flash Disk related problems (such as deleting folders and files) and so on.
Hard Reset
This reset is used to clear Keysoft System Disk of any added data - this is also called Hard Reset, or in the old days, Cold Reset. Depending on the unit, perform:
* For Classic, PK and mPower: Press dots 4-5-6 (JKL) while pressing the Reset (C3+C4 on PK) button. Do not release the keys until you hear a chime or music.
* Apex: Press the Reset button for about five seconds.
This reset is useful if Warm Reset does not fix any problems. This is also useful if you want to clear temporary Internet files.
NOTE: Humanware technical support recommends that you remove all storage cards from your Braillenote before attempting this reset.
Service Reset (Reset with Record buttons)
IMPORTANT NOTE: Please don't do this at the wrong times - use it as a last resort in consultation with HumanWare. This reset should be performed if no other reset works.
This ultimate reset restarts the hardware itself. Hold down Reset button and Record button at the same time. The braille display goes "funny," then the beep should be heard. After Keysoft starts, "the clock needs setting" prompt should appear. Reset the time and date (see "Setting Time and Date" for more info). Among the hardware which will be initialized includes the battery, the clock and the braille display.
Restart PK Hardware
This reset is used to turn off and restart BrailleNote PK. Hold down front keys called C1 (far left) and C4 (far right) until the PK displays "Off." Hold down these two keys once more, and the BrailleNote should display, "BrailleNote PK." After few seconds the chime should be heard.
Clean Reset (Apex only)
This reset is used to delete user settings from the BrailleNote Apex. Press the Reset button for more than twenty seconds, then release it. After few moments, the KeySoft startup sound should be heard, followed by prompts to reset date, time and so forth.
Some important notes
- Classic users: the Warm Reset, ROM Reset and Hard Reset are present in Classic (no Service Reset).
- PK users: the Reset button means C3+C4 and or without the added keys (the C3 and C4 Control keys are recessed keys on the front, to the right of the space keys). hold these keys down until you hear the beep. To perform an equivalent to Service Reset on the PK, press C1+C4 (the far left and right Control (recessed) keys) until PK switches itself off (a message "off" should be displayed); press these keys again to restart PK.
