Overview
There might be a time when data loss occurs – a user would lose what he or she was working on for no apparent reason. This is what’s called “the ultimate disaster” – having to work on the portion of the document again after losing it. For this reason, a handy feature called “Backup or Restore Files” exists to minimize data loss.
How does it work?
Backup or Restore is, in essence, an advanced version of “file copy operations.” In other words, it basically makes a copy of the source drive/folder/file onto a backup location – on another folder, a drive, on the Internet (on some software), etc.
BrailleNote is not an exception. Even though HumanWare has implemented a mechanism where user files are stored in Flash Disk (where there is virtually low chance of data loss), it is sometimes bound to fail, particularly with older BrailleNotes running KeySoft 3.0x.
How do I backup files?
- On the BrailleNote, go toMain Menu then press U for Utilities.
- At the “Utilities Menu,” press B for Backup or Restore Files.
- At the “Do you wish to backup or restore files?”, press B for Backup.
- At the Source Drive prompt, select the drive where the source file or folder resides (typically Flash Disk).
- At the Source Drive Name, you have couple options:
- To backup all folders, just press ENTER to select “All” folders.
- To select a folder such as General, press SPACE until the desired folder name is displayed or type the folder name.
Make a selection then press ENTER.
- At the Destination Drive prompt, select the drive where you want to store the backup.
- At the Destination Folder Name prompt, press ENTER to select the default folder name, which is in the format: date of the backup, followed by the word “backup”, e.g. If the backup was done on February 11, 2008, the folder name would be “February 11, 2008 Backup.” As in other folder name prompt, you can type a folder name e.g. BrailleNote Backup. If this happens, KeySoft says, “Folder does not exist.” Press Y to create a new folder. Same is true if you select the default folder name.
At this point, KeySoft should copy the files from the source location to backup place. After few moments, KeySoft says, “number of files copied” where “number of” means number of files that were copied from source to backup location.
What about backing up files which has changed since last backup?
This feature is called Incremental Backup. At the “Do you wish to backup or restore files” prompt, just press I for Incremental backup. The same prompts of “source drive,” “destination folder name” should be displayed.
Note: In order for this process to complete successfully, at the “destination” prompts, select the same location where a copy of the file(s) already exists. When this happens, KeySoft says, “(file) already exists. Replace?” where file is the name of the file that it is copying. Press Y to replace it.
Restoring files
- On the BrailleNote, go to Main Menu/Utilities (U)/Backup or Restore Files (B).
- At the “Do you wish to backup or restore files?” prompt, press R for Restore.
- At the “Restore from which drive?” prompt, select the backup drive. At the “folder name” prompt, select the backup folder.
- At the “Restore to which drive?” prompt, select the drive where you want to restore the files.
At this point, KeySoft should display “File already exists” where file is the name of the file that it is copying. Press either Y to copy the file or N to leave it at the backup location. Press A at this prompt, will copy all files from backup location to destination drive. After few moments, KeySoft says, “number of files copied.”
What about backing up one or more files?
If you simply want to copy one or more files, use “Copy File function” to copy the file.
